UKGC Compliance Updates: What Operators Must Act On

The UK Gambling Commission has continued its programme of tightening compliance expectations throughout 2024. For licensees, this is not background noise — it requires active operational response.

Customer interaction: the priority area

The most active area of UKGC focus in 2024 has been proactive customer interaction for responsible gambling purposes. The Commission expects licensees to identify markers of harm early and take timely, proportionate action — not simply make tools available and wait for customers to use them. Operators without robust monitoring workflows, documented interaction records and evidence of proportionate action are materially exposed to enforcement risk.

Affordability: the practical challenge

Affordability checks continue to be one of the most operationally complex compliance requirements for operators. Getting the thresholds right, the evidence requirements right, and the customer journey right — without generating unacceptable player friction — requires careful design and ongoing optimisation. Operators who have not reviewed their approach against current UKGC guidance should do so.

AML: enforcement remains active

Anti-money laundering compliance continues to be a primary area of UKGC enforcement action. Source of funds requirements for higher-spending customers, delayed or inadequate evidence collection, and AML policies that exist on paper but don't translate to operational practice are all areas where the Commission has issued fines in 2024.

Smaller operators are not exempt

A common misperception is that UKGC enforcement focuses on large operators. In practice, smaller UKGC licensees face the same compliance standards, and the consequences of failure are disproportionately severe relative to business size. An independent compliance audit by an operator with direct UKGC experience is a worthwhile investment before a potential regulatory review.
